Exercise for Stress Relief: A Natural Way to Reduce Stress

You might already know that exercise plays an important role in reducing stress level but you may not be quiet sure about which type of exercise for stress relief is best fit for your health or what schedule you need to follow.

In this blog post, let’s understand how exercise is connected to stress relief and how you can effectively manage your stress even with minimal exercise schedule.

Benefits of exercise

Any kind of aerobics exercise helps reduce stress level. Most importantly anyone can take benefits from these exercises to better manage stress. Few examples of aerobics exercise includes:

  • walking
  • running
  • swimming
  • cycling
  • stair climbing

Any physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which is a natural pain- relieving chemicals released by the brain during exercise. These chemicals create a sense of well-being, helping reducing the pain and discomfort.

Once you start exercising regularly whether it’s a daily walk, a nature hike or even playing pickleball, you’ll notice a positive shift from feeling stressed to feeling more energetic and optimistic. You’ll also be able to focus more effectively on your daily work.

It’s not mandatory to exercise everyday. Even exercising few days a week can boost your self-confidence, improve your mood and help reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.

Another great benefit of regular exercise is that it can improve your sleep which is something many people struggle now a days. Stress, depression and anxiety can all play a major role in disrupting your sleep.

Let’s take action now

If you haven’t exercised for a long time or if you have any health concern, I would recommend to talk to your healthcare professional before your start any new exercise routine.

You might feel excited about your new exercise schedule and end up overdoing it which could lead to other health issues. Instead, start with some light exercises and gradually increase the intensity as your body adapts to your routine.

You can get huge benefits form exercise by doing what you enjoy. For example, you might prefer walking, hiking , cycling , swimming or weightlifting. Remember, you don’t need to join a Gym to start any exercise. Of course, the gym has it’s own benefits but it’s not necessary to join gym to start any exercise.

One important point I want to highlight is creating an exercise schedule especially at the beginning. It could be something in calendar app on your phone or notes on the fridge whichever is easily accessible to you.

People are more likely to take actions when their goals are in front of them.

Keep going

Creating an exercise plan is the first step in your stress-free journey but most important part is sticking to it so let’s discuss about how you can stay consistent.

Create a specific goal that match your daily routine and then choose exercises which can fit in your goal plan. The type of exercise you select should align with what you want to achieve.

If possible, include your family members, co-worker or a friend in your exercise routine. Having someone join you brings a new level of perspective and motivation in your workout plan.

Remember, if you don’t have much time, even 15-30 minutes daily walk can provide you long- term health benefits. I personally go for a 30 minutes walk daily and sometimes walk longer if time permits.

Since I started walking regularly, I have noticed tremendous health benefits, including relief from back pain, better focus and increased productivity in my day-to-day work.
